name channapatna came from a small town situated between Bangalore and Mysore.

Channapatna make a living by selling wooden toys. The place is also known as
Gombegala Ooru or the toy-town of Karnataka due to its popularity in making

in the days of Tipu Sultan, the ruler of May sore, who was very fond of wooden
toys had invited artisans from Persia in order to tar in the local people to
make wooden toys. Since then Channapatna has become a major spot where majority
of people make toys for living. The interesting thing to keep in mind is that
the people here in Channapatan still uses the traditional methods for making
toys instead of using heavy machinery. Artisans prefer to use rosewood or
sandalwood to make toys.
The
artwork done by the artisans of Channapatna is not only known to the people of
the country, but also the work is quite popular around various parts of the
world. Owing to the beautiful work of art and craft of the town, the Karnataka
Government has declared Channapatna with the status of Geographical Indication
under WTO (World Trade Organization).

that, these toys are eco-friendly. The color use by the craftsmen to paint the
toys are made of vegetable oil. Hence, in all means these toys are not only a
beautiful piece of art but also non-hazardous which make these toys attractive,
simple, and safer yet beautiful.
